Gophers bowl game outlook: Where Minnesota stands after heartbreaking loss to Indiana

About Our Ads Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement The Gophers were 19 seconds and a 60-yard field goal away from pulling off a season-changing upset against No. 4 Indiana , but the reality is they're 5-3 with a daunting schedule ahead of them. How they react to Saturday's deflating loss to the Hoosiers will dictate the rest of their 2026 season.

The bowl system will likely look completely different after the 2026-27 season, with the 24-team College Football Playoff looming, but the Gophers have been a shoo-in for a bowl game in seven of the nine seasons under P.J. Fleck. They're still just one win away from officially earning bowl eligibility.

The latest bowl projections from industry experts:

On3 (Brett McMurphy) : Pinstripe Bowl vs. Pittsburgh

ESPN (Mark Schlabach) : Gasparilla Bowl vs. Syracuse

ESPN (Kyle Bonagura) : Myrtle Beach Bowl vs. Georgia Southern

CBS Sports : Duke's Mayo Bowl vs. Louisville

Athlon (Steve Lassan) : Pinstripe Bowl vs. Pittsburgh

There's currently a jumbled mess in the middle of the Big Ten, and Minnesota's success against Penn State, Northwestern and Wisconsin could be crucial in determining which bowl game they're selected for, if they do get to six wins. As of today, it looks murky.

If the Gophers had held on against Indiana, this week's game against UCLA would be for first place in the Big Ten. Now 3-2, the reality is that they're tied for fifth in the conference standings with six other teams. There's still technically a chance they could play in the conference championship game, but the final four weeks of the season would have to be extra chaotic.

Despite UCLA sitting all alone in first place in the conference standings, Indiana is still the betting favorite to win the conference, followed by Ohio State. Realistically, USC is probably the only dark horse after its upset win over the Buckeyes. All five 3-2 teams probably make up the conference's second tier.

Outside of Indiana nearly losing to the Gophers and USC upsetting Ohio State, the most eye-opening result in the conference was Iowa's 30-point blowout win over Wisconsin. The Badgers' time as a College Football Playoff "sleeper" lasted one week. Oregon is clearly still dangerous after beating Northwestern, and Nebraska is still Nebraska after another one-possession loss to Washington.

After watching how Ohio State looked with backup quarterback Luke Fahey, Minnesota's defense is good enough to help the Gophers compete against every single team in the conference, which makes Saturday's loss to Indiana that much more deflating.

Every game left on Minnesota's schedule is winnable, and also losable. This year is probably the most wide-open the Big Ten has looked in years, and the conference's winner will be whoever's able to survive the wreckage. Indiana has a clear path to the conference championship game, but a Gophers upset win over UCLA this Saturday could shake things up beyond that. It will be a fascinating final month of the season.
